Value a Used Car for Sale

When selling your car privately, it is good to check a few things out first before plucking a dollar sign out of the sky. To establish a price, do a little research first and get a valuation before you place your ad.

(1) Research First

Online Classifieds

(2) Get a Third-Party Appraisal

Getting a third-party appraisal is a great sales tool to help you sell your vehicle. A certified valuation will not only help buyers perceive you as a genuine seller, but also legitimise the price as it will be provided by the NRMA. There are two options:

Get an NRMA Vehicle Valuation Certificate

An NRMA Vehicle Valuation Certificate will provide you with a valuation appraisal for your specific vehicle. All appraisals are adjusted for odometer reading, options and condition.

Every certificate provides valuations for:

  • Dealer Trade price
  • Personal Buy/Sell Price
  • Dealer Retailer-Franchise Price

An NRMA Vehicle Valuation Certificate costs $11 per report. Download a Valuation Certificate here.

Get an NRMA CarWise Report

When selling a used car through a private sale, another way to boost your selling power is by providing your interested buyers with an NRMA CarWise Report. This will provide them with a comprehensive background check and give them everything they need to know about the car you’re selling.
An NRMA CarWise Report will tell buyers:

  • If there is any outstanding finance on the vehicle
  • If the car is stolen
  • If the VIN matches the vehicle specifications
  • What the current market value of the car is
  • If there are any manufacturing recalls on the car
  • An NRMA checklist of the car’s common faults and defects
  • CO2 Carbon Emissions for that vehicle
  • An NRMA road test report (if available for that model)
  • Car specifications
  • The next steps in what to do after you have purchased the car

Every Report comes with a REVS Certificate and Valuation Certificate. Click here to get a Complete Background Check.

(3) Set the Price

To get the maximum value back from the sale of your car, make sure you give it a great clean so it looks spotless and smells great! Plus if you think it needs any mechanical work, get this done before you place the car for sale.
Once this is done and you are pretty sure of the price your vehicle is valued at, set the price.

You should set your price higher than the final price you are willing to accept. For example, if you think that you would be happy to sell you vehicle at $18,000, set your sale price at $18,500 or $18,750. This will leave you with some room to negotiate as most car buyers will attempt to get into a bidding process with you.

(4) Give your Buyer a Receipt

A receipt? For a private sale? It’s usually unheard of. However if you want your buyer to feel completely comfortable, you can offer a buyer’s receipt just by downloading the Free Checklist right here at NRMA CarWise.

(5) Finally

Before the person who purchased your vehicle drives away make sure you give them:

  • All the keys including those for the ignition, glove box, boot and alarm
  • The service books, owner manual and log book
  • Instructions for working and de-activating any alarm
  • Location of the hidden ignition switch if there is one
  • Radio security number

All of these things help to make your buyer feel that they received value for money. Good luck!
