REVS Certificate: A legal document issued by REVS that may provide protection against repossession of a vehicle or boat by a credit provider. Credit providers must register the vehicle’s details with REVS if it forms part of a secured loan.
Chassis Number: A combination of letters and numbers which may vary in length. A chassis was assigned to vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1989. The chassis number can be found on the compliance plate of the vehicle or stamped on the actual body of the vehicle.
Engine Number: Identifies the motor of a vehicle or boat. It can be any combination of letters and numbers and may vary in length.

Recall: A recall is where a batch of goods may have a safety defect. The manufacturer or supplier will advertise the recall or write directly to the owner and rectify the defect free of charge. Not all owners respond to a recall, so if you're buying a used car and your Report results show a recall, youll need to know if there was a recall on the particular car you're looking to buy, and what you should do get it fixed free of charge.
REVS - Register of Encumbered Vehicles: A public register of motor vehicles financially encumbered. The register also contains additional information, such as vehicles that have been reported stolen and vehicles that have been written off.
VIN (Vehicle Identification Number): The VIN is a unique combination of letters and numbers and is 17 characters in length. It does not contain the letters I, O or Q and is assigned to vehicles manufactured from 1 January 1989. The VIN can be found on the compliance plate of the vehicle or stamped on the actual body of the vehicle.
The VIN is the prime identifier of the vehicle and it is critical that you provide the correct number when doing your REVS check. Failure to provide the correct number will cause your REVS certificate to be invalid.
Written Off Vehicle Record (for NSW registered vehicles only): There are 2 types of written off vehicle record; a statutory write-off and a repairable write-off:
- Statutory write-off: a vehicle that has been damaged beyond repair and it can only be sold for parts.
- Repairable write-off: a vehicle that is currently or has been previously written off. The vehicle may have been repaired, inspected and reregistered.
